FLYING CLOUD
ship
History
of
Flying Cloud ship:
The
Clipper ship Flying Cloud was a clipper ship built
in East Boston, Massachusetts
that set the world's
sailing record for the fastest passage between New York
and San Francisco in 1854. In the early days of
the California Gold Rush when it took more than 200 days
for a ship to travel that route, Flying Cloud's 89-day
was a headline-grabbing world record, making the ship a
celebrity overnight.
Flying Cloud was a
masterpiece of Donald MacCay who was one of the most
talented ship builders of that time.
Launched in 1851 and
208 feet in length along the waterline,
she
was extreme in any way: The length/width-ratio was
whopping. Sleek, sharp bowed slim ships designed solely
for maximum speed, streamlined hulls with copper plating
and masts higher than cathedrals. Beautiful and
terrifying at once, Flying Cloud was a Formula-1 gem
ship celebrated by the press, feared and admired, and
advertised brilliantly to draw in the goldrushed-people
ready to pay for the fastest passage to California. She
carried a crew of 101.
Flying Cloud
achievement was even more unusual because her navigator was a woman.
Seafarers, still today, are very superstitious
people. Women on board of a ship were considered bad
luck. But the Captainīs wife, Eleanor Creesy could
process the complicated calculations needed to
pinpoint a shipīs position. She also had a profound
knowledge of weather patterns, was able to interpret
clouds, waves and winds to come up with a weather
forecast and in this she was the responsible person
for passage planning.
On June 19, 1874, the
clipper ship Flying Cloud went ashore on the Beacon
Island bar in New Brunswick.
When she was gone, she still ruled. Her record stood for
135 years until a synthetic-fiber, three-man crew
sailboat Thursday's Child completed the
passage in 80 days, 20 hours, in 1989. A model of
this incredible wooden sailing ship should be proudly
displayed in many American homes and businesses.
