BIREME MODEL
Bireme is an ancient oared warship with two rows of oars
on each side. Invented by the Phoenicians, Bireme usage
dates back to 250-400 BC when they were used for the
first time as warships. At that ancient time they
measured only a few meters in length but proved to be
very tough and powerful. These military
ships were used by the Phoenicians, Assyrians, and
Greeks.
Greek Bireme became much larger at the
time when they were deployed extensively by the Greeks
during the famous Trojan War when these long vessels
achieved very high speed. The
pointed keel was an effective weapon for ramming enemy
vessels in close-quarter battles and boarding. The
Romans employed bireme extensively. Caesar's
invasions of Britain saw much action from the bireme.
Bireme
galleys escorted merchant ships but were rarely used to
carry goods. The bireme ship eventually evolved into the
trireme.
