USS
New Jersey is an Iowa-class battleship. She was
often referred to fondly as "Big J". New Jersey
earned more battle stars for combat actions than the
other three Iowa-class battleships, and was the only
US battleship used to provide gunfire support during
the Vietnam War.
USS New Jersey received nine battle stars for World War II, four
for the Korean conflict, and two for Vietnam. She also earned three Campaign Stars for service off Beirut, Lebanon
and service in the Persian Gulf, prior to Operation
Desert Storm. She also received the Navy Unit
Commendation for Vietnam service.
USS New Jersey was
built at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, and
launched on December 7, 1942. She was decommissioned for the last time in
1991. With a total of
Nineteen Battle and Campaign Stars, the USS New Jersey is
America's most decorated battleship and surviving
warship.
