CRYSTAL SERENITY
Crystal Serenity hold the
distinction of the largest cruise ship ever to navigate
the Northwest Passage.
Starting on 10 August
2016, the ship sailed from Vancouver to New York
City with 1,700 passengers and crew, taking 28 days for
the journey. In the Canadian Arctic she successfully
made stops at Ulukhaktok and Cambridge
Bay on Victoria Island, then passed up Franklin
Strait and through the narrow Bellot Strait, adjacent
to Zenith Point, the most northerly extension of North
America. She explored Beechy Island where Franklin
overwintered, followed by seldom visited fjords on the
south side of Devon Island, plus fjords on Baffin
Island and the village of Pond Inlet. On 5 September
2016 she sailed for Disko Bay in Greenland.
The keel of Crystal
Serenity was laid on 13 June 2002. She was launched on
10 August 2002 and completed on 30 June 2003. Her maiden
voyage was on 7 July 2003, 4 days after her christening.
It was a 14-day round-trip cruise, departing Southampton
and cruising Northern Europe.
On 14 January 2004, Crystal Serenity embarked on her
first world cruise; a 106-day voyage departing Los
Angeles, which concluded in New York City.
Passenger Lee Wachtstetter,
known as "Mama Lee", 90 years old in 2018, lived aboard
the Crystal Serenity full-time. She was the longest
permanent luxury cruise ship resident. In 2018, she
reached 10 years living aboard the ship. She spent about
US$170k a year to live on the ship full-time. Wachtstetter
chose Crystal Serenity mainly because of the
unparalleled onboard service that Crystal Cruises is
known for.
Crystal Cruises was
launched by Japan’s NYK in 1991 as a prestige product
that would, for 20 years, be the leader in luxury
cruising. Crystal revolutionized luxury travel at sea
with the launch of the first ship, Crystal Harmony in
1990. Crystal Symphony and Crystal Serenity followed
and, with them, came continued accolades for the Crystal
Experience, with noted acclaim for the supreme level of
service found aboard. The ships were periodically
redesigned that kept them at the height of elegance and
latest technologies, groundbreaking itineraries that
have reached all corners of the globe, and innovative
experiences on board and ashore that explore the
culinary and adventurous elements of worldwide cultures.
In 2015, the cruise line
was sold to Genting Hong Kong who had elaborate plans to
expand in the luxury niche with river and expedition
cruises, private residences. Unfortunately, the COVID 19
pandemic hit.
Heritage Group, a private equity group with
investments in the travel and tourism sector led by
billionaire Manfredi Lefebvre d'Ovidio, purchased
Crystal Cruises and the two cruise ships in June 2022.
The Crystal Symphony was sold for $25 million and the
newer Crystal Serenity $103 million.
The two ships resumed service in 2023 after undergoing
extensive refurbishment. You can experience awesome

In 2014,
ModelShipMaster enjoyed working with Crystal Cruise's
Japanese executives at Los Angeles headquarters to
restore a massive model of their famous ship. The
executives were highly detail-oriented and very
particular in quality. They were willing to do
everything possible to make it right. A photo of our work can
