SS LIBERTE ship

Liberte ocean liner

After WW II, the Blue Riband winner SS Europa of Germany was transferred to France. She was given $19 million refit and then renamed Liberte. The The SS Liberte ship made her maiden voyage to New York in 1950. She became the flagship for CGT French Line as a replacement for the legendary SS Normandie that had been lost during the Second World War.

On August 2, 1950 the Liberte ship made the inaugural voyage as a French vessel. Teamed with the Ile de France, the SS Liberte ship would give the world a small glimpse of what the French Line had to offer before the Second War. With crisp white linens and deft French service, the standards which rose Normandie to acclaim remained in place aboard Liberte.

As to 1950's came to a close, competition from the fancy Italian liners, elegant and powerful Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth of Cunard, and the new and impressive SS United States from the United States Lines, the French Line opted to invest in a replacement for the aging ship Liberte. In 1961 the new SS France entered service as a modern liner. The Liberte was ultimately laid up in 1962 and scrapped in Italy starting in 1963.

SS Liberte served for 11 years as the pride of France and finally was retired in 1961 after serving two great nations.

SS Liberte was featured prominently in the Jane Russell film The French Line. The Liberte ship also made an appearance in the 1954 classic film Sabrina, starring Audrey Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart, in the final scenes of the film. Other appearance was in 1953's "How to Marry a Millionaire" starring Marilyn Monroe, Betty Grable, and Lauren Bacall.
