ISLAND QUEEN riverboat

The Island Queen was a American sidewheeler steamboat built in 1925. She was used for excursions to Coney Island amusement park and tramping between New Orleans, and as far upstream as Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The Island Queen riverboat measured 285-feet long, 45 feet six inches wide. The two side wheels were 30 feet in diameter. The sidewheeler boat could carry 4,000 people. She tipped the scales at 1,000 tons and powered by six boilers supplied by the Charles Barnes Machinery Company, of Cincinnati.

The Island Queen steamboat was officially christened on April 19th, 1925 at Cincinnati's Public Landing. Captain Ben Pattison was her first captain. A couple months later, a new river gate and light house debuted at Coney to greet visitors from the boats.

Coney Island Company hired musicians to entertain the passengers on the Island Queen. Sidney Desvigne, a cornet player from New Orleans, recruited musicians from his hometown to perform on excursions for the Cincinnati market.

On Labor Day, September 1st 1947 the Island Queen steamboat departed Coney for the last time. After stopping briefly at Cincinnati's Public Landing the boat went upstream to Pittsburgh, PA. On September 9, 1947 at 1:16pm, the Island Queen exploded. 19 crew members were dead, a further 18 were injured. The explosion was caused by a spark when her chief engineer lit a welding torch near the oil storage tanks. No passengers were aboard at the time of the fire. Force from the explosions could be felt throughout downtown Pittsburgh, shattering windows in nearby buildings.
