GEORGE WASHINGTON
SUBMARINE
The USS George Washington was the world’s
first nuclear powered ballistic missile submarine. She
can be considered the submarine that has most influenced
world events in the 20th Century. With her entry into
service in December 1959 the United States instantly
gained the most powerful deterrent force imaginable - a
stealth platform with enormous nuclear firepower.

The USS George Washington submarine carried the Polaris
A1 missile on her patrols until 2 June 1964, when her
missiles were switched to Polaris A3s.
In the early 1980s, to make room within the limitations
imposed by SALT II for the Ohio-class ballistic missile
submarines, the George Washington submarine had her
missiles removed and were reclassified as attack
submarine, a role in which she served for several years
prior to being decommissioned by 1986.
