CHARLES W. MORGAN model
Charles Morgan is an American whaling ship built
in 1841. She was used to harvest whale oil which was
commonly used in lamps. Second to USS Constitution, the
whaler is the oldest seaworthy vessel in the world. Charles Morgan was the most successful
American sailing whale ship ever built.
She had a
complement of 26.
Sailing from Bedford, the Charles Morgan whaler would round
Cape Horn and travel north through the Pacific in search
of sperm whales. These voyages kept the ship and her
crews away from home for an average of 40 months.
Charles Morgan was very profitable. She made 37 voyages
in her eighty years of service.
The Charles Morgan whaling ship has served as a museum
ship since the 1940s and is now an exhibit at the Mystic
Seaport museum in Mystic, Connecticut. Designated a
National Historic Landmark in 1966, she is the world's
oldest surviving merchant vessel and the only surviving
wooden whaling ship from the American merchant fleet (of
an estimated 2,700 built.)
Charles Morgan ship appears in three movies: Miss
Petticoats, Down to the Sea in Ships, and Java Head.

the world's
finest and most accurate tall ship models. We never
cut the bowsprit and masts short in order to reduce
the shipping cost. We don't paint copper color onto
a wooden hull to make a false appearance of a copper
plated bottom. Our guns under the main deck are
'real' and our boats are real wood, not plastic
