CUTTY SARK
Cutty
Sark is a British clipper ship that was built in 1869 for the Jock Willis
Shipping Line. She
was built to be the fastest ship in the annual race to bring
home the first of the new seasons tea from China.
For years, people wondered Cutty Sark or Thermopylae was the
fastest. In 1872, a race from Shanghai to London was organized.
Both ships were fully loaded. The Cutty Sark was about 400 miles ahead of the Thermopylae
in the Indian Ocean. Then she lost her rudder and lost the race.
Supporters of Cutty Sark had not forgotten their defeat.
In 1875, the two ships arranged an outward race, the Cutty
Sark leaving London for Sydney nine days before the
Thermopylae sailed for Melbourne. The Cutty Sark made a
passage of 108 days and the Thermopylae 125.
The two ships were then again in rivalry from Sydney to
Shanghai with coal, the Cutty Sark doing the passage in
40 days and the Thermopylae, sailing nearly a month
later, in 48.
The
two ships were again in rivalry on the Australian
wool trade in the ‘eighties - the Cutty Sark beat
the Thermopylae by seven days in 1884.
In 1938, Cutty Sark was donated to Thames Nautical
Training College where she was used as a training
vessel. In 1954 she was placed in a specially
constructed dry dock in Greenwich. After much
restoration work Cutty Sark was opened to the public
in 1957. More than thirteen million people have
visited the glorious clipper ship.
