HMS
CAPTAIN (1787)
HMS Captain
was a 74-gun third-rate ship of the line of the
Royal Navy, launched in 1787.
In June
1796, Captain Horatio Nelson was promoted to
commodore (a
rank above captain and below rear admiral), he
moved
from the
HMS Agamemnon to HMS Captain
and led a squadron during Napoleon's march through
northern Italy.
In February 1797, Nelson
joined Admiral Jervis's fleet at the southwest tip
of Portugal, just before the fleet intercepted a Spanish
fleet. Realizing that the leading Spanish
ships were escaping, Nelson steered HMS Captain
out of the line of battle in order to attack. HMS Captain
bravely engaged a much larger ship, the famous
massive flagship four-deck
Santísima Trinidad,
136-gun (nearly twice as many as Captain's).
Later
HMS Captain combated with San Nicolas, 80-gun. When
she was seriously damaged and hardly maneuverable, Nelson
himself led a boarding party onto the San Nicolas. Soon after, he was about to board the San
Josef but the San Josef lowered its flags. The taking of the two larger ships was later
immortalized as 'Nelson's Patent Bridge for
capturing First-rates.'
HMS
Captain was the most severely damaged of the British
ships as she was in the thick of the action for
longer than any other ships. The Battle of Cape St. Vincent
made Nelson's name. He was knighted for his
initiative and daring. In the same year Nelson
was promoted to Rear Admiral of the Blue.
