HMS BOUNTY
HMS Bounty was an English
three masts, full-rigged ship launched in 1784. She was purchased by the Royal Navy for the
transporting of breadfruit from Tahiti to
British territories in the West Indies.
The breadfruit was supposed to serve as cheap food for
slaves that worked in the sugar cane plantations.

HMS Bounty was commanded by
William Bligh. He
was 33, had a career that included a tour as sailing
master of the HMS Resolution during
Cook's third voyage. The ship's complement was 46 men.
After 5 months on the Tahiti
island, HMS Bounty weighed anchor on 4 April 1789. She
carried more than
1,000 breadfruit trees. On the 22nd day
at sea, the ship's second in command, Fletcher
Christian, seized the ship in a mutiny.
The mutineers
ordered Captain Bligh, along with 18 loyal seamen,
aboard the ship’s launch and cast them adrift. Using
only a sextant and a pocket watch, Bligh managed to
reached safety in 41 days.
The mutineers settled on Pitcairn Island
in 1790 and burned the HMS Bounty. Fourteen
mutineers were eventually arrested in Tahiti and brought
back to England.
