The Hinckley
Picnic Boat is a line of boats built by Hinckley
Yachts, a company that has been building boats
since 1928. The Picnic Boat line introduced an
entirely new yacht in a class of her own.
In 1994, Hinckley broke its
no-building-before-buying rule. The company was struggling
financially when co-owners Bob Hinckley and Shep
McKenney came up with the idea for a dayboat: it
would look like the lobster boats that trolled
Maine’s rocky coves, be made of the
then-newfangled Kevlar composite, and use an
innovative inboard jet system to allow the hull
to navigate shallow water.
The first Picnic Boat was launched in May of
that year, with no interest and no
buyers. Today, the Picnic Boat is a cornerstone
of the company’s business. The boat is available in 34-,
37-, and 40-foot variants with price tags of $1
million to $1.7 million.
The original Picnic Boat is the Picnic Boat 34'
- 37", introduced in 1995. It is a new class
with a shallow draft, composite construction,
and maneuvering jets. This waterjet technology
gives a top speed of 34 knots, and allows owners
to explore secluded coves and shallow waters
easily. The new Picnic Boat also includes
virtual anchor which, at the touch of a button,
you drop a virtual anchor to hold your boat's
position anywhere in the world. Another new
feature is the dynamic steering which
automatically adjusts the amount of turning
needed as the speed of the boat increases.
Picnic Boat 34' - 37" can accommodate six
passengers and one crew member.
In 2017, Hinckley announced the all new Picnic
Boat 40--The largest and most innovative Picnic
Boat ever. The Picnic Boat 40 brings a fresh
perspective on the most successful Hinckley
series ever built. The hull, designed by top
naval architect Michael Peters, has lightest
strength and durability for a faster, more
fuel-efficient ride. This durability is backed
by a lifetime hull and deck warranty. Inside,
the completely reimagined layout features
seamless flow from transom to helm, plentiful
lounging space, a wet bar, and full sun
coverage. The completely redesigned Jetstick III
allows easy navigation through tight turns and
docking at tricky marinas. Below deck, the
interior converts from cruising to day boating
layout. Optional 550hp Cummins give the Picnic
Boat 40 a top speed of 38 knots. SilentJet
technology allows the boat to run in silence.
In
2020, Hinckley celebrated the 25th anniversary
of the Picnic Boat with the Picnic Boat
Signature Edition, which includes the 34 S, 37
S, and 40 S hulls. These hulls are made with a
carbon inner layer and a Kevlar outer layer for
puncture resistance. .
In July 2024, to celebrate the 30th anniversary
of the original Picnic Boat, Hinckley Yachts
introduced the Picnic Boat 39. The new model is
the first Hinckley Picnic Boat to have forward
seating, which creates more space for
entertaining and relaxing. The boat has three
separate entertaining areas, and a sliding
window mechanism for easy access to the
foredeck.
