ITASCA YACHT
ITASCA
was original built in 1961 as an ocean-going tug known
as THAMES III by Smit Salvage of the Netherlands.
In
1979, THAMES III was converted to a private yacht by an
American family, who renamed her "ITASCA".
Between 1982 and 1993 ITASCA cruised mainly on the west
coast of central and North America. In 1994 the same
owners refitted and re-equipped ITASCA from bow to stern
giving the accommodation a luxurious feel.
In 1994, when owned by the former US Secretary of the
Treasury William E. Simon, ITASCA made history as the
first motor yacht to complete a voyage from west to east
through the Northwest Passage. Four
months later ITASCA was plowing through the treacherous
waters of “Drake’s Passage” to Antarctica. Her hull
is structurally reinforced and equipped to Lloyds
highest standards for her encounters with polar ice.
With a
vast range of 13,000 nautical miles powered by the
option of two man’s to a single screw, she has excellent
back up and ship-like economy operation. Thoroughly well
maintained, ITASCA is fully in class, Lloyds +100 A1 LMC
and Charter compliant although she has only been enjoyed
privately.
This 37"
long x 15" tall x 8" wide model was commissioned by a
grandson of the man who converted Thames III into
ITASCA. The model reflected the yacht when
converted, based from blueprint and photos supplied by the owner
(who was only 10 years old at the time of the
conversion.)
The
ITASCA yacht model was hand-delivered on May 6th, 2018 in
Laguna Niguel, California.
