KORU yacht
Koru is a
$500 million mega yacht commissioned by Amazon founder
Jeff Bezos. At 417 feet long and a gross tonnage of
3300, she is the largest sailing yacht in the world.
Koru's profile is characterized by a long bowsprit
and a classic canoe stern which will provide enhanced
privacy while the yacht is in port. There is a
sizeable dip pool on the aft, as well as a
crow’s nest on the mizzenmast.
Koru yacht was completed in April 2023, by
Dutch shipmaker
Oceanco.
She is one of the world’s most luxurious ships,
incurring a daily upkeep cost of $137,000. The
half-a-billion-dollar ship is nearly twice the
length of an Airbus A380. Accommodating this
maritime masterpiece is a formidable task,
achieved by positioning it next to oil tankers.
In addition to being so gigantic, Koru is
followed by a $75 million 246-foot long support
vessel, Abeona. The custom-built vessel carries all
the toys and tenders of the main yacht, and it
has a helicopter hangar.
When the 416-foot
sailing yacht Koru first arrived in the US in
Nov. 2023, no dock at Port Everglades could
accommodate her. The largest space at the port
caters to superyachts up to 400 feet. Therefor,
Koru had to be docked near a 610-foot-long oil
tanker.
The yacht Koru’s design is said to be inspired by Māori art. “KORU” in Māori means “loop or coil.” In Māori art, the koru is a
symbol of new life, growth, strength, and peace.
The spiral shape of the koru represents
perpetual movement and returning to the point of
origin. Bezos made a post on Instagram referring
to KORU, highlighting personal
growth, renewal, rebirth, and the importance of
being present in the moment.
