MISTRAL CLASS AMPHIBIOUS
ASSAULT SHIP MODEL
The
Mistral class is comprised of five French amphibious assault
ships, also known as a helicopter carrier. The 69,000 sq ft. flight deck can accommodate up
to six helicopter movements simultaneously. The
19,000 sq ft hangar deck can hold 16 helicopters. Every
helicopter operated by the French military is capable of
flying from these ships (NH90, SA 330 Puma, AS 532 U2
Cougar or AS 665 Tiger.) Mistral aviation capabilities
approach those of the Wasp-class amphibious assault
ships, for roughly 40% the cost and crew requirements of
the American ship.
The vessels use French-designed 59-tonne EDA-R catamarans
in the stern deck to deliver troops and vehicles ashore.
It can carry a 40-strong Leclerc tank battalion, or up
to 70 lighter vehicles including 13 AMX Leclerc tanks.
The Mistral Class is fitted with a high-performance
communications suite, which makes the ship suitable for
deployment as a command vessel. Command center can host
up to 150 personnel.
These are the first ships of the French Navy to
use azimuth thrusters which gives ships significant
maneuvering capabilities. It is an all-electric warship.
Power is generated by four diesel generators, these
vessels have a range of 10,700 nautical miles.
The space saved by the use of the azimuth thrusters
allowed for the construction of accommodation areas
where no pipes or machinery are visible. Crew cabins
aboard Mistral-class ships are generous. The fifteen
officers each have an individual cabin. Senior
non-commissioned officers share two-man cabins, while
junior crew and embarked troops use four- or six-person
cabins. When United States Navy vice-admiral Mark
Fitzgerald inspected one of the Mistral-class ships in
May 2007, he said it would have used the
same accommodation area to host a crew three times the
size of Mistral's complement. The ships have has
a crew of about 180. 450 marines, with a surge of 900,
can be accommodated.
Each
Mistral ship carries a NATO Role 3 medical facility,
equivalent to the field hospital of an Army division or
army corps, or to the hospital of a 25,000-inhabitant
city, complete with dentistry, diagnostics, specialist
surgical and medical capabilities, food hygiene and
psychological capabilities. The 900 m2 hospital provides
20 rooms and 69 beds, of which 7 are fit for intensive
care. The two surgery blocks come complete with a
radiology room providing digital radiography and
ultrasonography, and that can be fitted with a mobile CT
scanner.
A Mistral
class vessel is armed with two Simbad launchers for
Mistral surface-to-air missiles and two 30 mm Breda-Mauser
guns. There are two twin-barrel A-220M 57 mm guns and
six-barrel AK-630M 30 mm guns. In 2011, the French Navy
selected the NARWHAL 20 remote weapon station (RWS) to
equip Mistral ships for close-in self-defense, with one
gun covering the port bow and the other covering the
starboard stern. In 2013, all three Mistral ships are
equipped with two M134 Miniguns each; intended for
close-in self-defense against asymmetric threats faced
during anti-piracy operations.
In 2010,
Russia ordered two Mistral class ships. These ships were
built in France. It was planned that 2 more ships will
be built in Russia. However the deal was cancelled due
to Russia's military aggression in Ukraine. On 5 August
2015 it was announced that France shall return Russia's
partial payments of $1.53 billion. In 2015, Egypt and
France concluded the deal to acquire two former
Russian Mistral, including the costs of training
Egyptian crews. The ships were named Gamal Abdel
Nasser and Anwar Sadat.
