USS South Dakota (BB-57) is
a South Dakota-class fast battleships built for the
United States Navy in the late 1930s. The other
ships are Indiana,
Alabama, and
Massachusetts.
Because of her successful exploits against the Japanese
in the South Pacific, the mighty battleship USS South Dakota
became a legend before she was a year old. She
first served in a fifteen-month tour in the Pacific
theater, where she saw combat before returning to New
York for an overhaul. Back on operational duties in May
1943, she joined British Home Fleet patrols in the North
Atlantic and Arctic Oceans before sailing to the Pacific
in August 1943 for a second tour.
She brought down a
total of 32 Japanese planes and was the first ship to
fire on the Japanese home islands.
Most warships are built for an active career of 20 or 30
years. The USS South Dakota was in commission less
than five, but in that short lifetime she covered
herself with
more honors and glory than most other ships
served in much longer periods. She was in every major
battle and her 13 battle star record was behind only the
famous USS Enterprise.
USS South Dakota caught the fancy of the American people
when her heroics were reported in newspapers under the
titles of "battleship X" and "Old Nameless."
