LAURA MAERSK
Laura Maersk is the
world's first container ship to be powered by a
methanol-fuel engine. She is 564 ft long, 105 ft wide,
and has a gross tonnage of 25,750 GRT.
Laura Maersk was named
by President of the European Commission Ursula von der
Leyen in Copenhagen on 14 September 2023. She is named
after the steam ship SS Laura, the first ship owned
by Peter Mærsk Møller, father of the founder of Maersk.
Laura is a name deeply rooted in some Maersk’s very
early innovative landmarks. When Captain Peter Maersk
Moller bought his first steamship in 1886, he named
it Laura. With its steam engine, Laura was a product of
the second industrial revolution, making its impact on
the shipping industry significant. Laura was also the
first vessel bear the white seven-pointed star on a
light blue background that later would become the logo
Maersk.
Maersk has an ambitious
2040 target of net zero greenhouse gas emissions and
aims to transport a minimum of 25% of Ocean cargo using
green fuels by 2030. The 2,100 TEU feeder vessel Laura
Maersk is an important step toward the long-term
objective of gradually renewing the entire Maersk fleet
to operate solely on green fuels. Maersk has 24
additional methanol vessels on order for delivery
between 2024 and 2027 and a policy to only order new,
owned vessels that come with a green fuel option.
Laura Maersk saves up to 100 tonnes
of CO2/day.
We build this primarily
wood model of the Laura Maersk the
following sizes.
19"
long (1/350
scale), 34" long (1/200 scale), 47" long (1/144
scale), 68" long (1/100
scale). A 34" model will be completed soon.
Don't be fooled by junk
containership models circulating out there.
They are mass
produced by sweatshops. The middlemen import them by
container loads and when they realize that they can't
sell them easily, they unload them with extremely low
prices to save storage fee and to salvage their
transportation cost. The grave errors in the photo below
(Maersk
Alabama)
took us less than 5 minutes to spot.
