USS OLYMPIA
model
When she sailed into
Manila Bay, the extremely heavily armored USS OLYMPIA
was considered the world's fastest man-of-war
afloat. This significantly historic ship of
the US Navy served as the head of the Asiatic
Squadron on May 1, 1898, seven days after
Spain declared war on the US.
In the bay, the USS OLYMPIA stopped only to within a few hundred yards
of the Spanish fleet. Within a mere six hours
of naval battle, the OLYMPIA, as flagship of
Commodore Dewey, effectively raised the U.S. to the
world power status and stripped Spain off hers. The Spanish fleet had suffered a terrible loss in
ships and men but the American sustained only casualties of 30
wounded and one dead! The USS OLYMPIA proved herself
so well in
battle and maneuverability that the future building of the US new steel
Navy followed many of her design characteristics.
In WWI, USS OLYMPIA became
the flagship of the Patrol force Atlantic Fleet. During
this time she was escorting convoys, and patrolling off
of Nova Scotia. On April 28, 1918, USS OLYMPIA
sailed out of Charleston, S.C. bound for Murmansk to
take part in the Allied intervention against the Russian Bolscheviks. She joined the Allied force on May 28,
1918, and landed approximately one hundred of her crew
to join the forces that marched inland. Members of the
USS OLYMPIA'S crew also helped man two of Russian
torpedo boats.
On October 3, 1921, the USS OLYMPIA departed for
Europe and brought back the body of the Unknown
Soldier for interment at Arlington National
Cemetery.
The USS OLYMPIA is the last surviving ship of US
Spanish America War fleet. She is now restored as a National
Memorial, on the Delaware River at
Philadelphia, PA.

Be aware of some very bad
models of the USS Olympia out there. Their railing is
ridiculously short that it would be at a person's knee
level on a real vessel. The larger guns have smaller
barrels than the smaller ones. The boats are ugly. The
bow and the stern do not resemble those of the Olympia
at all. Many
