CONSTELLATION CLASS FFG FRIGATE MODEL
The Constellation class (FFG 62) multi-mission
guided-missile frigate is being developed by Fincantieri
Marinette Marine for the US Navy.
The frigate Constellation will have the capability to carry out
multiple missions, including anti-air warfare,
anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, and
electronic warfare. It can operate independently or as a
part of a strike group. It is designed to perform
operations in littoral and blue water environments.
The USS Constellation will feature improved lethality and
survivability, and also increased electromagnetic manoeuvre warfare (EMW) capability, which offers
multiple options to fleet commanders, as well as to
support the National Defense Strategy during a range of
military operations.
The frigate will have the capability to carry an MH-60
Seahawk helicopter and an MQ-8C Fire Scout unmanned
aircraft system.
The USS Constellation FFX-62 will be built at the
Marinette Marine shipyard in Wisconsin. The award was of
a $795 mil. Options for up to 10 ships could make the
contract worth up to $5.6 billion.
The Constellation class will have a length of 496 feet, a beam of 65
feet for a 7,500-ton displacement. It will have the
capacity to accommodate more than 200 personnel and will
be able to operate with dual crews. According to Fincantieri, the ship will be future proof as it will
generate 12 megawatts of power.
Although built by an
Italian company, the FFG class will have a great deal of American
content--more than 96%
by value. The FFG 62 propulsion equipment is on the
transition path to be fully manufacturer in the United
States beginning with the first ship-in-class. The U.S.
Navy “is committed to fostering a healthy and efficient
shipbuilding industrial base. GE has announced that they
will provide the LM2500+G4 aeroderivative marine gas
turbine to power the future frigate.
The Constellation class is a critical
test of the US Navy's return to building ships around
existing technologies rather than designing them around
technologies in development. The Constellation class
will be the model for how the Navy designs and builds
the next class of destroyer.
