TS MICHELANGELO ocean liner

For a large 63" long model of the SS Michelangelo model, click here

SS Michelangelo was an Italian ocean liner built in 1965 for Italian Line by Ansaldo Shipyards, Genoa. On 21 April 1965, after five years of construction, a ship that was over 45,000 gross tons and over 900 feet long, with a service speed of  27 knots was delivered. SS Michelangelo was the ship that represented a synthesis of Italian industry and artistry.

After many years of looking enviously on other nations, Italy could finally boast their new champion. The
SS Michelangelo ocean liner had a very distinctive profile: sleek and sharp. The most striking feature was her Turin polytechnic-designed funnels, which consisted of an intricate trellis-like pipework to allow wind to pass through the funnel, and a large smoke deflector fin on the top. The funnel design proved to be highly effective in keeping smoke off the rear decks. The smoke deflectors became popular in ship design during the 1970s and 1980s, whereas the idea of allowing wind to pass though the funnel was picked up again in the late 1980s and is almost the norm in modern shipbuilding.

SS Michelangelo’s interiors were designed by three famed marine architects, Nino Zoncada, Vincenzo Monaco and Amedeo Luccichenti. The quality of their work was well established having worked on Italian Line liners. Michelangelo’s interiors were more classical in style, whist her sister was quite different. Her sister ship Raffaello was handed over to design architects, Michele and Giancarlo Busiri Vici who had mostly worked on buildings and were known for their unique style of futuristic designs. The magnificent first class restaurant and foyer would stand out as being simply remarkable.

Although grand in every way, sadly SS Michelangelo and Raffaello had a relatively short 10 year Trans-Atlantic career, which ended due to the Jet age. However, their short lived career does not detract of the grandeur of the Michelangelo and Raffaello, for they will always be known as being the pinnacle of Italian shipping.

Together with the Italian ocean liner Raffaello model, this primarily wood SS Michelangelo model has been displayed on the CMIT-Europe's board meeting room since 2018. Our SS Michelangelo classic ocean liner ship features:

"Hello Frank, yes it's a beautiful model, my compliments; just one remark, I would have liked seeing the Italian merchant marine flag flying instead of a naked mast…  George (Marine Architect)."
