USS
Wakefield (AP-21) was a troop transport that served with
the US Navy during World War II. Before her war
service, she was the luxury ocean liner SS Manhattan.
The
24,189-ton,
705-ft
SS
Manhattan was built for the United States Lines at Camden, New Jersey by the New
York Shipbuilding Company. She was designed to carry
1,239 passengers; 582 cabin rooms, 461 tourist rooms,
and 196 third class. The main cabin class public rooms,
including a grand salon, library, palm court, verandah
cafe, and open recreation or dance space aft, were on
the promenade deck. On 15 June 1941, the Manhattan
was commissioned as the USS Wakefield and became the
largest vessel ever operated by the US Coast Guard. In
1942, she caught fire and was rebuilt as a troop ship.
The Manhattan never saw commercial service again.
This primarily wood model was
commissioned by a private collector whose
grandfather was transported by the Wakefield to
the European theater during World War II. The
sailor snuck up on deck in the middle of the night,
stood on the stern and watched the phosphorescent zig-zagged wake to dodge enemy submarines while steaming to Liverpool.
