VIKING III
Roro ship

The Viking III (1965-1982) and her predecessors--Viking I and Viking II, were designed to provide maximum free space and this concept successfully reduced the number of pillars in the passenger spaces. The revolutionary design resulted in no pillars in the promenade deck hall and a minimum in the restaurants and lounges.

While Viking I and Viking II were built in Norway, Viking III was built in Germany.  Equipped with bow thrusters, Viking III could turn completely in her own length.  From the speed of 20 knots she could be brought to a stop in 85 seconds.

There are three radar systems-a Kevin Hughes 3cm dual insterswitch installation and a 10cm Raytheon. Two 2000-watt searchlights were fitted on each side of the wheelhouse top.  Main propelling machinery consisted of two 5,100 hp diesel engines.

Delivered in 1965 to Thoresen, the car ferry Viking III remains in services, operating year-round in the Adriatic between Italy and Greece and Albania.  She was so revolutionary at the time and revitalized the Southampton cross channel ferry route so successfully that the company became one of the biggest ferry companies in the U.K.

This  primarily-wood model is 48" long. The hull and the superstructure are hollow, comprised of many pieces of wood precisely cut and assembled. The ship's information was mostly provided by Mr. Cliff who was employed onboard the ship. He first saw the colorful modern ship when his family lived by the beach near Southampton UK and she was so different than the old big passenger liners he saw at the time in the 1960s. "The more I look at Viking III the more proud of the model I am. Great job! Anyway I have now got a few pretty good pictures of the tugboat Heide Moran and her close sister tugs together... I will go ahead and fill in your commissioning form again. Also if I do go ahead with it, will it be possible to mail you the plans and pictures with my notes this time?"
